Today, as I was catching up on the news, I discovered this useful information regarding GMOs. According to Webster’s Dictionary, GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms, and according to an article I read this morning:
“Scientists have NEVER assessed the effect of genetically modified foods (GMOs) on the human body, while 80% of the packed foods contain DNA-manipulated ingredients. This is made worse due to the fact that the food is not even labeled as genetically modified which complicates the efforts to avoid them because the request for their labelling is discarded by the enormous food producers.
In order to improve plant resistance to pests, increase the yield, and reduce the time of ripening, scientists genetically modify crops. But we are not acquainted with the issues they cause to our health as there are no published results of a survey. However, two nutritionists named Jason Mud and his wife Mire who studied at Harvard and Yale Universities advise people to stick to organic and locally grown foods avoiding industrially produced milk, meat, and fish as the animals have previously been fed with alfalfa, GMO corn, or soybeans.
Even though these foods are not labeled, there are couple of tricks you should know in order to notice them. First, check the number on the product label named PLU (Product Lookup Number). If it is a 4-digit number starting with 3 or 4 it means that the product is not GMO, but has rather been grown on a farm which used chemicals and pesticides. If there are 5 digits beginning with 9, it means that the product is organic and grown without pesticides, chemicals, or genetic modifications. If there is a 5-digit number which begins with 8, then the products are GMO crops which are unnaturally bred using genetic modification.
It is almost impossible to avoid the GMO foods as they are widespread and common, but these fruits are rarely genetically modified: kiwi, eggplant, mangoes, asparagus, peas, avocado, pineapple, onions, mushrooms, watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and cantaloupe. While the following products have a far bigger chances of being genetically modified and they are: celery, apples, hot peppers, cheery, zucchini, corn, oranges, kale, green beans, potatoes, blueberries, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, grapes, nectarines, strawberries, peaches, and peppers.”
As a dad I am concerned about how little we know about what we are feeding our families.
What are your thoughts on this?
